As I am prepping for our new little bundle of joy to website, I am starting to remember how overwhelming it can feel to prepare for a newborn. We kept a lot of gear from our firstborn like our high chair, swing, bouncer, and pack n’ play, but this pregnancy included a bit of a shock when found out we were having a boy at our 20 week sonogram. This means all the boxes of sweet baby girl clothes I lovingly packed away are not going to be so useful for this newborn!

Luckily this time I have experience and I know exactly how I want to dress my baby. When you’re fighting the exhaustion of being a new mommy, the last thing you want to worry about is fussy baby clothes. I only bought baby boy clothes that are comfortable, durable, and a great value because we know they won’t be in them for long.

Our daughter basically lived in Carter’s baby clothes because not only are they super cute, they make dressing easy. So as soon as we found out we were having a boy, I went back to Carter’s to buy all the basics. Here’s what I got:

Newborn

  • 6-8 bodysuits
  • 4-6 leggings/footed pants
  • 4-6 sleep & plays
  • 2 sleep gowns
  • 4-6 pairs of baby socks
  • 2 easy outfit sets (for church, meeting grandparents, etc.)
  • 2 swaddling blankets
  • 2-4 caps, mittens, and booties

0-3 Month

  • 10-12 bodysuits
  • 4-6 leggings/footed pants
  • 6-8 sleep & plays
  • 4-6 pairs of baby socks
  • 4 easy outfit sets (for church, meeting grandparents, etc.)
  • 1 pair of baby shoes

3-6 Month

  • 10-12 bodysuits
  • 6-8 pants
  • 6-8 sleep & plays
  • 4-6 pairs of baby socks
  • 6 easy outfit sets (for church, meeting grandparents, etc.)
  • 2 pairs of baby shoes
  • Summer: 4-6 rompers / short sets
  • Winter: 4-6 jackets / pant sets

When you’re looking for baby clothes, try to find styles with the ability to mix-and-match. Also pay attention to all the closures. It’s totally your preference, but it will definitely matter! I have some friends who swear by zippered sleepers and others who love sleeping gowns. I personally love sleepers that have snaps from top to bottom so that I don’t have to completely undress them just to change a diaper.

Other pieces that are must-haves in my opinion are pants with built-in footies (no baby socks!), Carter’s original bodysuits, and snap-up rompers for the summer! Also, don’t forget about other essentials like baby blankets, baby shoes, and baby bedding.

  1. This checklist is so helpful! I’ve been registering for baby clothes, as well as picking up some on my own… and I was wondering how many of each item and what sizes I should plan for. Thanks! One question… what is a sleep & play?? ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Haha, thanks! I figured that out after I asked. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m looking into the number of items I’ll need as baby gets a little older, too…. 9m-24m. Would you say the number of clothing items needed are similar to your category for 6m? Thanks!

        1. I would say the numbers would be the same until they are in their clothes for a little longer, so 9-12 Month would probably be the same but you might need a few more of each thing for 12-18 months and 18-24 months because they don’t grow quite as fast. Also, what you buy for them might change. Your 18-24 month old might wear fewer onesies and more shirts and pants or dresses.

  2. What is the difference between newborn and the zero part of 0-3 months? Also, several of my Carter items say 3 month. Iโ€™m not sure which one to count the item in. First time mom here! ๐Ÿ™‚
