DIY Modern Farmhouse Christmas Tree Decor

While I love decorating for Christmas, I don’t always love the traditional animated red and green decor. There’s not anything wrong with a dancing Santa statue, it’s just doesn’t exactly fit my cozy cottage design style.

I can feel a little lost in the Christmas decor aisles because everything seems to be flashy or extremely pricey. That’s why I usually ditch the decor stores and head for the home improvement store – aisles and shelves filled with lumber and parts – that is my happy place!

So, this year I made my annual (and very frustrating) trip to the home decor store, got inspired by all the beautiful pieces and decided to make my own. As I sat in my car with my sketchbook, I designed a modern farmhouse Christmas decor project that’s so easy even the kids can help. Here’s how you make it:

Supplies

12″ x 12″ Sheet of plywood
1 piece of pallet wood
(11) 1.5″ x 1.5″ blocks
3 types of stain
Spray laquer

I began by painting the plywood white and setting it aside to dry.

Then I ripped the pallet wood into 1.5″ strips and cut them down to length. Two strips should be 12.25″ and two strips should be 11.75″.

Then I sanded and stained the wood blocks. I used three different colors of stain and left three blocks natural. When they were dry, I sprayed them with spray lacquer and let them dry overnight.

We glued the strips of pallet wood to the plywood square and secured them with a nail gun. Then we arranged the blocks how we wanted them and glued them to the board.
