Campfire Breakfast Pizza - Our Handcrafted LifeIs there anything better than sitting around a hot campfire on a cool night with your family?

Campfire Breakfast Pizza - Our Handcrafted Life

I’ll be honest, I never thought I was the ‘outdoorsy’ type. I don’t like creepy crawlers at all! But I gave in to camping with my husband because I knew it would be good for my kids to grow up spending a few nights under the stars.

Of course, I fell completely in love. The memories you make sitting around a fire or huddling in a tent in the rain are the kind that will last forever. Our summer can be full of graduations, camps, and more that we can miss out on moments to enjoy time together. It’s important to celebrate those simple, yet memorable, moments, like sneaking away for a weekend in the woods that make the season unforgettable.

The other thing I love about camping? Cooking over an open fire! My husband’s family has been camping for his entire life, so he has recipes that have been passed down through the generations. But I’ve gotten to create a few camping recipes of my own. I thought I’d share one with you today.

Begin by building up a fire with a lot of wood and allow it to burn down until there is a nice bed of coals.

Brown the Smithfield Hometown Original Breakfast Sausage Patties in a cast iron skillet. Flip them several times to ensure even browning.

Smithfield makes their breakfast sausage available in a variety of options, depending on your preference: links, rolls and patties. This sausage is an excellent option to include in your main breakfast dish, or serve it on the side! Our Campfire Breakfast Pizza wouldn’t be the same without the breakfast pizza wouldn’t be the same without the Smithfield sausage. If you are unable to plan a weekend to get away for a camping trip, create fun outdoorsy memories by camping in your own backyard!

I love these sausage patties because they are hearty, wholesome, and simple. They definitely make this a dish worth remembering

Smithfield Breakfast Sausage comes in a variety of flavors, like Hometown Original, Bacon and Maple flavors. You can try the different flavors and figure out which appeals to you and your camping brood! They’re also made with the most quality ingredients, primarily premium pork, and they don’t contain gluten or MSG. It’s the perfect addition that will make you feel good about adding it to your breakfast plate.

Then assemble the crispy potato rounds (or regular tater tots) in the bottom of the cast iron skillet and form one ring up the sides of the skillet.

Then lay in your cooked Smithfield Hometown Original Breakfast Sausage patties.

Mix together the eggs, milk, and shredded cheese. Pour the mixture over the potatoes and sausages.

Put the skillet either on a grate just above the coals or directly on the coals and cover with a cast iron lid. Place some coals on top of the lid to ensure an even cook.

Allow the breakfast pizza to cook for 25 minutes, tending to the coals throughout cooking.

Depending on how your coals are burning, it could take anywhere from 25-40 minutes. Just be patient and keep checking to see if it’s done. (It’s totally worth it, I promise!)

When it’s done, just remember that the handle of the cast iron skillet will be very hot. Carefully take it out of the fire and allow it to cool.

Then cut into it and enjoy! Your whole family will flock to get a piece of this delicious breakfast pizza.

Cast iron skillets are oven safe, so instead of cooking it over a campfire, simply cook the breakfast pizza in your oven after assembling it at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

If you are going camping, you’ll want to have a few games for around the camp site! My favorite game is Kubb – it’s an ancient game that has been played for centuries. We have a version you can make yourself! Check out the full details about how to make your own set of Kubb here: http://ourhandcraftedlife.com/play-kubb-diy-backyard-game/

How to Play Kubb

After your make your own set of Kubb, you can play it while you are camping! Grab a team of 2-3 players (we like to play girls against boys!). Just set up five blocks at each end of a large rectangle and place the tallest block (the King) in the center. Take turns throwing your sticks and trying to knock down the other team’s blocks before knocking over the King Kubb last! It’s a ton of fun and one of our favorite games to play while camping.

How to Play Contact

We also love playing the word game, Contact, which is perfect to play around a campfire. You need at least three people to play. One player will be the ’thinker’ and the goal of the game is for the ‘guessers’ to guess the word the thinker has secretly chosen.

Here’s how you play:

The thinker secretly comes up with a word (for this example, we’ll use the word HOUSE) and he announces the first letter of the word – “H” – as a starting hint.

The guessers now come up with their own words that start with the letter H and provide clues to make the Thinker guess the word.

Guesser 1: (Thinks of the word hand) Is the on your body?

Thinker: “No, it’s not a hand”

Guesser 2: (Thinks of the word hat) “Do you wear it on your head?”

Thinker: “No, it’s not a hat”

Guesser 1: (Thinks of the word horse) “Is it an animal?”

Thinker: “No, it’s not a hippo.”

  • Now, if the thinker guessed the wrong word, he can keep guessing.

Thinker: “Hen? Hamster? Honey Bee?”

If the thinker can’t come up with the right answer, the guessers can earn another letter by counting 3, 2, 1 and yelling the correct answer. Then the thinker has to give a second letter and all of the guessers words have to begin with those two letters. This continues until the guessers have correctly guessed the Thinker’s original word.

Here’s a downloadable print with all the rules for Contact. You can print it out and laminate it to take with you on your camping trip or save it as a picture on your phone.
